Name: Pearl
Canon: Steven Universe
Canon point: Post “That Will Be All”
Age: Literally thousands of years old. Like. She’s older than recorded human history.
Appearance: Here
Personality:
  • In human terms, Pearl is kind of the equivalent of a badass mom with a (sort of) secret hardcore past. At least, secret in a way where you might not guess how hardcore she is right away just by looking at her. But even if she doesn’t quite look the part, it’s true that she was a rebel back in the day, someone who dedicated her life to fighting the establishment and getting into all kinds of trouble. Nowadays, she has a family to help look after, so she’s had to chill out and be responsible... But she still dreams of the glory days, and the old thrill of putting her life on the line fighting injustice and tyranny.
  • However, the above descriptor does not account for the fact that she was literally manufactured to be a fancy house-servant type of slave for a member of the gem social elite.
  • ...Nor does it touch on how she had to teach herself how to fight so she could partake in what turned out to be a very violent rebellion.
  • Basically, Pearl has had to overcome a lot of hardship and personal shortcomings to get where she is today. First she had to sacrifice any connection to her home planet when she followed Rose Quartz into rebellion. Then, she lost countless friends in the fighting that followed.
  • The harshest blow yet, though, came 14 years ago when she finally lost Rose, a woman who she both admired deeply and harbored romantic feelings for. Pearl heavily relied on Rose for emotional support and validation, and losing her sent her into a spiral of grief that lasted for quite some time.
  • Nowadays, she’s far more stable. Though she still lacks some self-confidence and requires a lot of encouragement from her friends in order to keep focused, Pearl is much better equipped to handle that on her own now, and is learning to seize her destiny in her own hands.
  • All that tragedy and struggle aside, Pearl has mostly moved on in her life.
  • She is described by Rebecca Sugar as having an incredibly "precise" personality, a natural perfectionist who always strives to have a strategy in place.
  • Incredibly detail oriented and organized, sometimes almost to the point of it being a hindrance for others.
  • She is fiercely loyal and protective of those she cares about; during the war she protected Rose, often at the risk of her own life. She fight just as hard for any of her friends now, too.
  • Pearl is very proud of her rebellious past and loves to wax nostalgic about the bravery of the Crystal Gems. She also readily acknowledges that she is technically a criminal, and has been one for the last 6000 years.
  • She despises clutter and filth in all forms, and is very fastidious about keeping her personal space neat and tidy. She also has an aversion to food, and will not partake in the stuff like some other gems will.

    Background/AU details: Wiki whaaaaat
    Strengths & weaknesses:
+Highly skilled in combat (particularly with swords and spears)
    +Tactically brilliant
    +Highly efficient and precise
+Skilled with the operation and construction of vehicles and other machines
    +A Beautiful Singing Voice
    +Can dance/do ballet like nobody’s business
    - Cries a lot
    - Occasionally is just too gay to function
    - Being built like a twig and having noodle arms matters a lot more now that she’s not a super-powered alien rock.
    - Can sometimes be oblivious/inattentive to other people’s needs and opinions.
    - Repulsed to her core by food, the concept of eating, and everything else that comes with it.
    Depowering/humanization:
There’s a lot of these and I’m sorry.
  • Hammer Space: Pearl can store numerous items in her gem, and summon them back out at will. Usually this involves stashing a lot of swords away so she’s never truly unarmed, but she also stores things like police tape, medical tape, and sinister gem-powered hand mirrors in there as well.
  • Weapon Summoning: Gems are capable of summoning unique, magical weapons from their gems, which seem to be made of light/magic the same way their bodies are. Pearl’s weapon is a special spear that can project blasts of energy from the tip. She can also conjure two spears at once and dual wield them with great proficiency.
  • Light projection: Gem can light up like a flashlight to illuminate dark spaces.
  • Hologram projection: Pearl can produce both holographic images and hard light duplicates of herself from her gem. Primarily she uses this as a visual aid while lecturing, but the hard light duplicates can wield weapons and attack on their own. She can also make illusions of herself for the purposes of distracting and confusing an enemy.
  • Gem-Tech interfacing: This is pretty irrelevant to the game setting, but Pearl can naturally just “plug in” to Gem operating systems, with the ability to read, display, and control data contained within.
Water-Walking: With concentration, Pearl can run/skip across the surface of still bodies of water.
  • EXTREME JUMPING: Like the other Crystal Gems, Pearl is occasionally shown to be able to leap absurdly high into the air, and cover great distances in a single bound.
  • Psammokinesis (sand control): Pearl has some minimal control over sand, as demonstrated in “Giant Woman” when she created some kinetic miniature sand figurines for a demonstration on fusion.
  • Nephelokinesis (mist/cloud control): She also demonstrates some minimal control over mist/clouds/fog, as shown in “Sworn to the Sword”, when she summoned up a dense mist to shroud the practice field in the battle stadium, and then banished it again at will.
  • Regeneration: Since her true form is her gem, and everything else is just a projection of hard light, Pearl can both change her form, and also take immense amounts of damage without truly dying. When damaged enough, as long as her gem is not harmed, she will “poof” and retreat back to her gem, forming a new body and re-emerging after a period of about 2 weeks.
  • Shapeshifting: Limitless and can involve taking the form of an animal or object, or it may simply involve stretching/altering the size and shape of a single limb. However, Pearl is shown to have something of a reluctance towards shapeshifting, and she does not really use this ability.
  • Fusion: Gems of different types can willingly combine their light and form a new and completely different being.
None of these abilities are based in DNA or genetics. They’re simply a product of being a magical space rock and having an extraneous body made out of light. For humanization purposes, Pearl is going to look exactly the same. She’s just going to be made out of meat instead of light.
Placement preference: I'm cool w/ starting out in either but ultimately it's gonna be Team Barry for the win
Character goals: I don’t have many plans beyond Pearl getting to be a smug and obnoxious rebel. She’ll probably struggle a bit between her desire to relive the glory days of the Gem rebellion through helping out here, and her desire to get home as quickly as possible without dying.
